why company owner's are taking interest in SEO work

I am having almost 15 years of experience in online marketing industry, worked in various type of company like travel, automobile, hotels, IT, real estate, publication house, the owner is not interested too much in every work like coding, printing, booking method, building, content writing, print media, print advertisement  etc, but when they come to the contact in SEO/SEM/Online Marketing/Internet marketing then they try to feel their manager that they are very expert in online marketing industry and as they have lots of work so they hire you to implement their ideas on website, and they are sure with this their business will grow, so many times manager thinks they are right and work under pressure and so many time manager sit silent and implement only that, that their owner says, and every time discus every point with owner with this words, they you are guru of mine in this field, so i need to work under you, the owner feels pride with this words, but   as they are no any kind of practicle knowledge of the field and suggest only those things they seen on their competitors website without any deep analysis, so many time wee see only one phase of the site, but there are so many layers inside the every work, if some one is using folder structure then it has a separate plan for promotion, is they using sub-domain structure then there is another plan of promotion, if some one is adding links in footer then it has a different strategy, if some one is adding links inside the content it is differ, but owner seen only one thing at a time so they suggest, and the result is google manually penalty, then owner asked to manager what happened to the site, then manager replied with very gently you are expert in this field so i did what you said without using my brain, as you are my guru in this field, after that the owner of that company never say to any one that I am expert in Seo, and handover the website to manager and ask only progress, and check the results only.

Why SEOs do Link Building

Since last 10 years, I am working for online marketing and analyzing lots of changes in google algorithm, Google is saying we consider a link as a vote for the site, and a site can get link from anywhere as from forum, blog, website, I agree we do not stuff link anywhere, but what about if any other add my site's link in forum, blog or any website as a reference.

I have collected few point here to discus:

Mr. Gabe said the following represent the culprits:

Mr Gabe said Forum spam: This includes comments in forums with exact match anchor text links.

My question is this if any one add my site's link in any forum under the comment section then what will be the effect?, I am not hoping for a positive effect but is there any effect of negativity, Yes, Mr Gave is saying site owner is culprits.

Forum bio spam: Biographies of forum users containing exact match anchor text links.

The same question is arise, and if i am making profile in a forum then why I am making, I made for the people to know me, my business and website, if my site is not get any benefit from that forum then why I will be involve in forum posting.

"Do follow" blogs: Blogs that don't add nofollow to the links posted. "Let's face it," Gabe said. "Being listed on do-follow resource sites can absolutely send Google a signal that you are trying to game links."

This concept is out of scope, I do not understand, if Google is not considering the no-follow link then how you will punish a site.

Blogroll spam: Watch for blogroll links gone wrong. "Some may be fine," Gabe said. "If you are unsure which ones are bad versus good, ask for help from a seasoned SEO."

What should be the use of a blog if we do not place some link of my site, now if you loves a blog then what is next, surely you want to know more about the main business.

Spammy directories: If you've used spammy directories in the past, and still have links out there, Gabe said "nuke them, have them nofollowed, or disavow them."

Blog comment signature spam: Google seems to be targeting these links even when they're not followed, Gabe said.

In all, i just understand, now SEO is nothing just a simple logic, place very new and  updated content for the user, and stop all kind of link link building, just wait if someone place your site's link then only you get backlink.
